Start with the material

Tap a swatch to see the same run of fence in each material, with one sourced line on what to ask about it.

Pick a material

White vinyl

Family Fence in Bellmore backs its white PVC with a limited lifetime warranty. Barrette, which makes Bufftech, says its own lifetime warranty does not cover labor, so ask the installer what their workmanship warranty covers.

Cedar

Western Forest Products says unfinished cedar ages to a silvery grey, and a stain keeps the color longer but has to be redone. Use galvanized or stainless nails so rust does not bleed into the boards.

Black aluminum

Superior Fence & Rail says its aluminum carries a lifetime transferable warranty and that it tests the powder coating against 3,000 hours of salt spray. That is one company's claim, so ask each installer what their coating is rated for.

Galvanized chain link

Merchants Metals, a chain link maker, says the lower the gauge number, the thicker the wire, and its Class 2 zinc coating carries a 20 year limited warranty against 15 years for Class 1.

Every job on the request form

Each line style is how that kind of fence would be drawn on a survey. Pick one to read about it, or to start a request with it already chosen.

Fence companies with the most Google reviews

Sorted by review count from a Google Maps snapshot taken in October 2026. Both counties license fence work, so every card links to the county lookup.

How a post and panel fence goes in

These four steps follow Bufftech's printed instructions for its vinyl fence. Wood and chain link differ in the details, so ask your installer how they set posts.

  1. Mark the line

Call 811 before the first hole. New York 811 lists fence post holes as digging that needs a call, and PSEG Long Island says to call 2 to 10 business days ahead and the marking is free.

  2. Dig the post holes

Bufftech calls for holes 30 inches deep or to the frost line, about 10 inches across for a 4 by 4 post and 12 inches for a 5 by 5. Your local code sets the frost depth.

  3. Set the posts

Each post sits in concrete. Bufftech warns that a soupy mix is weaker, and wants the gate hinge and latch posts stiffened with aluminum or rebar and concrete.

  4. Hang the sections

Rails slide into the posts with about an inch of room at each end, which Bufftech leaves so the vinyl can expand. The gate goes in last, with its own clearances.

What happens after you send a request

  1. Tell us the job

Pick the kind of fence, your town and a rough length. A survey helps, but you can ask without one.

  2. Hear from up to three

Your request goes to up to three companies who do that work. They call or text to set up a visit.

  3. Compare, then pick

Look up each license, compare the written quotes line by line, and hire whoever you like, or nobody.

Start a request

Before the first estimate

  1. 1.Does a fence company need a license on Long Island?

Yes, in both counties. Nassau County Consumer Affairs lists "fences and railings" among the home improvement work that needs a county license, and Suffolk County Code section 563-16 includes fencing in home improvement contracting. Our license guide shows how to look a company up.

  2. 2.Do I have to call before digging fence posts?

Yes. New York 811 names fence post holes as digging that needs a call, and PSEG Long Island says homeowners and contractors are legally required to call 811 first. Call 2 to 10 business days ahead. The marking is free.

  3. 3.Do I need a permit for a fence?

It depends on the town and the height. The Town of Brookhaven's fence diagram allows a 4 foot fence on the property line without a permit and a 6 foot fence with a building permit. The Town of Huntington lists fences 6 feet and over as needing a permit. Incorporated villages issue their own, so check with the village if you live in one.

  4. 4.Does it cost anything to request quotes here?

No. It is free for homeowners. Contractors can pay to be featured, and featured listings are labeled on the page.
